While the entire world is paralyzed by the coronavirus, Cahuita Turtle Rescue has continued with the monitoring, care and release of sea turtles following safe sanitary measures implemented by the authorities. This year, we have rescued 32 nests so far which is considered a successful number considering last year we rescued 18 nests.
In mid-March of this year the Leatherback Turtle spawning season officially began in Playa Grande, Cahuita and then on May 23 (World Turtle Day) the hatching and release season started. The spawning should be ending around August and hatching around October.
Thanks to the work carried out by Cahuita Turtle Rescue, around 150 baby turtles have been released from the more than 1,500 that are still in incubation phase and under our care.
The releases have been carried out in a very controlled way and with minimum contact between people in accordance with Ministry of Health protocols.
