Children and Nature: This Is How the II Environmental Rally of Turtle Rescue Cahuita Unfolded in Cahuita National Park
Cahuita, Limón | August 24, 2025 —
On Sunday, August 24, in celebration of Costa Rica’s National Parks Day, the iconic Cahuita National Park came alive with color, learning, and environmental awareness during the second edition of the Environmental Rallyorganized by Turtle Rescue Cahuita.
Beginning at 8:00 a.m., more than 60 children, youth, and adults from surrounding communities arrived with enthusiasm, ready to take part in a day filled with discovery, conservation, and community spirit.
Environmental Education for New Generations
Guided by the dedication and joy of 25 volunteer leaders, participants rotated through multiple educational stations, each focused on key environmental themes such as marine biodiversity, sea turtle conservation, waste management, creative recycling, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Each station featured age-appropriate, interactive activities that blended play with meaningful reflection. Participants not only learned essential environmental concepts but also strengthened their connection to the natural heritage that surrounds them.
Inclusion of Rural Communities
A highlight of this second edition was the participation of 15 students from Escuela de Carbón, a nearby rural community invited as part of Turtle Rescue Cahuita’s commitment to inclusive environmental education, particularly in vulnerable and underserved areas.
“What we experienced during this Rally reflects the core of our mission: to educate, inspire, and cultivate love for nature from an early age. Cahuita National Park is a living classroom, and children are our greatest allies in conservation,” said Laura Villalobos, Director of Turtle Rescue Cahuita.
Local Alliances Strengthen Conservation
The rally was made possible thanks to the collaboration of Cahuita National Park, the Cahuita Community Development Association, the Civil Society Platform for the SDGs, and more than a dozen local businesses, hotels, and restaurants, who generously contributed donations, snacks, logistical support, and heartfelt enthusiasm.
These types of alliances reinforce the social and ecological fabric of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, and prove that when communities come together, environmental education becomes a powerful, accessible, and transformative experience.
