Leatherback Sea Turtle Release — August 17, 2020

We have rescued 42 turtle nests and released over 1000 baby turtles already this year! Please support our work!

August 17, 2020 – 52 Leatherback sea turtles released.

Playa Grande, Cahuita, Costa Rica

Turtle Rescue Cahuita is a NGO dedicated to voluntarily protecting sea turtles.

This year 2020, we have successfully rescued, during the COVID-19 quarantine, 42 nests and as of today released more than 1000 baby turtle hatchlings. All of these rescues were done with only four volunteers who went on patrol day and night looking for fresh nests. These patrols covered 8 kms of beach between November 2019 to March 2020. With technical support of a drone with night vision, valued at 5000.00 USD, we could be able to increase the vigilance in the area, help to trace and locate nests, and identify all the turtles that are on the beach to lay their eggs.

Unfortunately, every night on this beach there are poachers that double us in numbers and who are dedicated to the illegal sale and consumption of turtles eggs and their meat.  We are asking you to make an economic contribution that will help us to acquire this drone in the hope of rescuing even more turtles next nesting season.

In addition, we need help buying daily items that we depend on to complete our patrols and care for the nests in our nursery like… latex gloves, trash bags, large plastic containers, thermometers, a small digital scale, masks, and hand sanitizer.

We are grateful for your generous and valauble collaboration that allows us to save more turtles.

Thank you!
